Want to make real changes in the world we live in?
Volunteer. Join an activist organization. It does make a difference. Change only happens when we take matters into our own hands and act. Casting a vote is only the first step.
I have listed a few links (okay, a LOT) here. More than half are non-political. I have been non-partisan in posting -- if it was submitted it was included as long as the organization didn't promote hate or racism. Please join any organization working to effect a change you believe in. You have nothing to lose but your free time, and a tremendous amount to gain.
You can make a difference.
I do have a request: please spread the word. I'd like to expand this list as much as possible, so if you would like to suggest a site, please add it in the comments. Also, please send this post around to any communities you think might be interested and ask their members to comment here. I'll add everything to the main body of the post, credit the commenter and try to keep it organized.

Tools
From
deb_0_rah: volunteermatch.org has a search engine, just put in your zipcode to see what volunteer opportunities are in your area, also there is a more detailed search that can specify volunteering opportunities that are good for kids, the elderly, or groups. Also, I would recommend to anyone to look in their phonebook and find their local food bank. There's nothing simpler.

Additional notes:
Great advice from
verymelm: “...also, in a sort of less political but more helping your fellow neighbor vein, folks can check with their local colleges and universities to see if they need volunteer “tapists” or “readers” - people who work usually with Disability Services to record text books to tape for blind and dyslexic students.
And generally speaking, if you’re up for a more significant time committment, most crisis hotlines will take and train volunteers to man their hotlines. They usually require a certain number of hours of training and a monthly committment, but it’s a phenomenal experience.”
Wonderful advice from Go Blog and Multiply: “...any local animal shelter. Another good idea in general is to call a local home for the elderly. They are always looking for volunteers just to say hang out wth the residents, play games, lead holiday programs, etc. (Remember “Tuesdays With Morrie”).”
From
kest: Try your local school district and other local youth programs.

thank you for doing this (:
I'm just happy people are interested! :)
It's been fun doing this!
Also, in a sort of less political but more helping your fellow neighbor vein, folks can check with their local colleges and universities to see if they need volunteer "tapists" or "readers" - people who work usually with Disability Services to record text books to tape for blind and dyslexic students.
And generally speaking, if you're up for a more significant time committment, most crisis hotlines will take and train volunteers to man their hotlines. They usually require a certain number of hours of training and a monthly committment, but it's a phenomenal experience.
Thank you also for this excellent advice. I took this comment and pasted it in the post itself, under a new "Additional Notes" category.
With several colleges and universities nearby, I might look into doing this myself.

GBAM
Gah. I hate PETA. Tell your lovely wife I'm making an exception 'cause it's her birthday. ;-) *grin*
I'll post them up top in a few mins.
Since he didn't credit himself, I'll do it. GBAM is: http://sixdaywar.blogspot.com/ :-)
http://www.socialaction.com hosts a large collection of resources for Jewish audiences who want to participate in volunteer causes, especially those which involve coalition-building. The abolition of slavery in the Sudan, environmental conservation, moratoriums on capital punishment, etc., are just some of the campaigns currently rostered on the site. The site will introduce you to extra organizations which you can also admit to your list.
Thank you very much for the site link -- I just posted it and credited you. I'll no doubt be skimming them later and adding some of the organizations they link to.
Although I saw someone mention it above, I don't think that I spotted the link anywhere. Apologies if I just missed it:
The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (USA)
Thank you!! :-)
Okay, the quibble: There's a typo in your Union of Concerned Scientists link. It should be:
http://www.ucsusa.org
So, now you know at least one person tried to join an organization from this list. It worked!
Great minds think alike, eh? I hope you don't mind, but if you have any on your lj that I've missed, I'm going to add them here. I promise to give credit to you and whomever posted them! :-)
Many thanks for letting me know that it's working, too. So many people have donated links, but I'll never really know if this list has had any effect on those who happen across it.
Here's another: America's Second Harvest
I didn't see that one there, so forgive me if I missed it.
I just added them and credited you. Thanks! :-)
If you are concerned that the election may have been rigged, but don't want to descend into tinhat land, there is a reasonable organization that is trying to find out for sure.
Black Box Voting's website says:
They don't seem to be nutters, but concerned citizens staying well within the realms of the "reality-based" paradigm. :-)
Worth a look, particularly if you have the specific legal skills they need.
Thanks for the link(s)! :-)

Idealist.org listed a few local school systems, but I couldn't find any existing site that linked to many at once. I added your idea to the notes section, though. :)
Is it too much to ask for a separate category that's specifically GLBTQ-focused? I can find you tons of links for that, and I know lots of people who'd appreciate it.
~ Tanith
Many thanks!
Thanks for pointing this out. I'll review the site. As you might expect, I haven't taken the time to investigate everything here. (I only scanned each to confirm they had activist or volunteer opportunities and didn't suggest illegal acts.) If YAF is promoting hate speech, racism or something similar, I'll remove them this evening.
BTW, if it would help you to have the text from an 'edit entry' box rather than grabbing the source code for the page, let me know and I'll be happy to email you a text file. It's a complete pain in the neck stripping all the extra LJ code out.
Oh, and when your site is up, please let me know? I'd love to link to it.
I noticed you have several pro-choice organizations on your list, but I don't think I saw any pro-life organizations. Since it appears to me that you are trying to make this list politically ecumenical, I hope you don't mind my suggesting a few.
First, I want to point out a few groups where liberal pro-lifers may feel more at home than the many Christian-run, socially conservative groups that most people are more familiar with:
Feminists for Life
Democrats for Life
Pro-life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians
Athiest and Agnostic Pro-life League
Libertarians for Life
Consistent Life - This is a favorite of mine. They advocate a consistent ethic of life--something that many people find appalingly rare in US politics. They are equally opposed to abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, and war--anything that destroys human life.
Here are some good places to find opportunites for pro-life activism:
Human Life International - This is a Catholic organization that promotes pro-life activism around the world.
The Nurturing Network - This is a network of crisis pregnancy centers that promote abortion alternatives. Volunteering at a crisis pregnancy center is an excellent way to get involved for the many people (according to some polls, the majority of the population) who believe abortion is terrible, but are not interested in pushing to change the law so that it is illegal again. This tool is also a good way to find a local crisis pregnancy center.
And finally, National Right to Life - This is a major pro-life political lobbying organization.
